چکیده

The adsorption of CO on the Pt(111) surface in a ( √ 3× √ 3) pattern has been studied with the gradient corrected functional of Perdew and Wang and the B3LYP hybrid functional. A slab which is periodic in two dimensions is used to model the system. The Perdew-Wang functional incorrectly gives the fcc site as the most favorable adsorption site, in accord with a set of previous studies. The B3LYP functional gives the top site as the preferred site. This confirms results from cluster studies where it was suggested that the different splitting, dependent on the functional, between highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, could be the reason for this change of the adsorption site. This is supported by an analysis based on the projected density of states and the Mulliken population.

CO Adsorption on the V (100) Surface: A Density Functional Study

Adsorption of CO molecule on the Vanadium surface has been studied by using of the DFT method with LANL2DZ,6-31G* and 6-31G** basis sets by GGA approximation of theory. Using periodic first principles simulations we investigate the interaction of oxygen molecule with regular V (100) surface. The limitation of this approach is the use of thin metallic slabs with a limited range for their coverag...

CO on Pt„111... puzzle: A possible solution

CO adsorption on the Pt~111! surface is studied using first-principles methods. As found in a recent study @Feibelman et al., J. Phys. Chem. B 105, 4018 ~2001!#, we find the preferred adsorption site within density functional theory to be the hollow site, whereas experimentally it is found that the top site is preferred. The influence of pseudopotential and exchange-correlation functional error...

Molecular adsorption at Pt(111). How accurate are DFT functionals?

Molecular chemisorption at a metal surface is a key step for many processes, such as catalysis, electrochemistry, surface treatment, tribology and friction. Modeling with density functional theory is largely used on these systems. From a detailed comparison with accurate micro-calorimetric data on ten systems (involving ethylene, cyclohexene, benzene, naphthalene, CO, O2, H2, methane, ethane), ...

Interaction of atomic hydrogen with monometallic Au(100), Cu(100), Pt(100) surfaces and surface of bimetallic Au@Cu(100), Au@Pt(100) overlayer systems: The role of magnetism

The spin-polarized calculations in generalized gradient approximation density–functional theory (GGA–DFT) have been used to show how the existence of second metals can modify the atomic hydrogen adsorption on Au (100), Cu (100), and Pt (100) surfaces. The computed adsorption energies for the atomic hydrogen adsorbed at the surface coverage of 0.125 ML (monolayer) for the monometallic Au (100), ...
